Stronger Organizations Are Built From Within
MissionArc Advisory was founded on a simple observation: organizations do not become stronger simply by asking talented people to work harder.
Sustainable progress comes from building the clarity, alignment, systems, accountability, and institutional capability that allow people to do their best work and organizations to perform consistently over time.
MissionArc exists to help nonprofit leaders build that foundation, with particular expertise in strengthening the organizational capacity behind philanthropic performance and growth.
Effort Can Drive Progress. It Cannot Replace Capacity.
Throughout my career, I have seen organizations accomplish remarkable things because talented, committed people were willing to do whatever was necessary to move the work forward.
That commitment is a strength. But over time, it can also mask organizational limitations.
When important knowledge lives with a few people, decisions repeatedly escalate to the same leaders, processes depend on individual memory, or results require extraordinary effort to reproduce, an organization may be succeeding without yet having built the capacity to sustain that success.
Organizational capacity is what turns individual contribution into institutional capability
It creates greater clarity around priorities and responsibilities, makes successful practices more repeatable, preserves institutional knowledge, strengthens accountability and decision-making, and allows the organization to grow without continually asking its people to compensate for weaknesses in how it operates.
MissionArc was created to help nonprofit leaders recognize those constraints, determine which ones matter most, and intentionally build the capabilities needed for what comes next.
A Perspective Shaped Across Organizations, Roles, and Challenges
My perspective on organizational capacity has been shaped by nearly three decades of working with organizations, leaders, and teams from different vantage points.
Across nonprofit philanthropy, consulting, technology, customer success, and organizational leadership, I have seen many of the same challenges appear in different forms: growth outpacing existing systems, talented people compensating for unclear processes, competing priorities making execution difficult, and organizations struggling to turn successful practices into repeatable ones.
I have also seen what changes when organizations address those challenges intentionally. Clearer roles improve accountability. Better processes create consistency. Useful information strengthens decision-making. Shared practices preserve knowledge. Leaders gain greater capacity to focus on where the organization needs to go rather than continually compensating for how it operates today.
MissionArc brings those lessons together.
The approach combines an understanding of nonprofit philanthropy with broader experience in organizational performance, client strategy, systems, implementation, and leadership. That perspective allows MissionArc to look beyond an immediate symptom and understand how the organization's people, processes, information, infrastructure, and priorities are working together.
Meet Chris Harris
Chris Harris is the founder and principal of MissionArc Advisory, where he works with nonprofit leaders to strengthen the organizational and philanthropic capacity needed to support sustainable growth.
His career spans nearly three decades across nonprofit philanthropy, consulting, technology, customer success, and organizational leadership. Throughout that work, Chris has helped organizations and leaders navigate growth, strengthen client and constituent relationships, improve processes and systems, and translate strategy into execution.
Chris has worked with nonprofit and educational organizations across the country and currently serves on the board of Family Promise of the Triangle, where he chairs the organization's fundraising efforts. That involvement provides firsthand experience with the opportunities and constraints nonprofit organizations face as they balance mission, resources, fundraising, governance, and growth.
Before founding MissionArc, Chris held leadership roles in the technology sector, including more than six years in customer success leadership with a publicly traded software company. He also brings experience from Blackbaud and holds an MBA from the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School.
Chris founded MissionArc to bring those experiences together around a central belief: organizations create sustainable growth when they build institutional capability rather than continually relying on individual effort to overcome organizational constraints.
